Browser Crashes and Web Page Redirects after Ubuntu Update

Browsers were left open during a routine system update in Kubuntu 12.04.3.  Normally, this is OK.

However, after the update these browsers experienced crashes, unexpected web page redirects and an inability to load pages.  Resetting profiles and reinstalling did not fix the issue.

Changing DNS servers resolved the issue.  Flushing DNS might have also worked.

Browsers that were not open at the time of the update were not affected.

UPDATE:

The browser issues returned. However, not opening Chromium seems to stop the other browsers like Firefox from redirecting unexpectedly. It could have something to do with how Chromium handles DNS.
