Print to Ubuntu from Windows

Share a printer connected to a Ubuntu machine with Windows computers on the same network.  The method outlined below uses CUPS, not Samba.

  1. Make sure the printer and the Ubuntu machine are connected and powered on.

  2. Configure Ubuntu for network printing.

  3. Find the printer URL using the CUPS web browser interface.  Use the static IP of the Ubuntu machine and port 631 when configuring Windows computers. See “NetworkPrintingWithUbuntu“.
  4. Paste the URL from step #3 into the Windows Add Printer wizard.
  5. Select a printer from the list to automatically install a print driver.  Or, click Have Disk and browse to the folder where the appropriate print drivers (.inf files) can be found.

  6. Finish the Add Printer wizard.  Repeat steps #3 through #5 for each Windows computer sharing the Ubuntu printer.
