Unplugging Adult Sites at the Router

REF: How to block adult web sites

Some software can run as much as $50 per license, per computer for ‘nanny’ programs that block access to adult sites.

With the high availability of broadband Internet and the subsequent use of wired/wireless routers, using OpenDNS to filter inappropriate content at the DNS level could save concerned parents a bundle.

I have tried and performed this operation (successfully) once. I wonder if it’s a marketable service and how quickly I could complete similar jobs to make it worth the time and effort considering …

  • Unknown/lost router passwords
  • Preexisting networking issues being brought to light once in the router
  • Having to troubleshoot the aforementioned issue which, completely unrelated to the task at hand, could lead to a customer service nightmare
  • The lack of tangible, CD software and the associated refer-to-their-technical-support phone number could lead to unforeseen and unwarranted callbacks without a proper service agreement.
